PWD officials said construction of Phase-III will begin in March 2015 and is likely to be completed by December 2017. Administrative approvals and expenditure sanctions for the project

Officials said according to a PWD study last year, there are 70,000 passenger car units (PCUs) operating on Phase-I of the elevated corridor between Sarai Kale Khan and Jawarharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium. The second phase between JLN and INA, which is expected to be completed by December 2015, will see 1 lakh PCUs operational.

“The project will cut travel time drastically and save fuel. The extension will be connected to South Delhi, easing traffic on NH-24. It will also decongest the Ring Road at Ashram, South Extension and Bhairon Marg. While it takes 45 minutes to travel from Mayur Vihar to AIIMS, it will take only 10 minutes once the new corridor is completed,” a PWD official said.

Officials said the corridor aims to provide a signal-free junction at the UP Link road near Mayur Vihar. A flyover parallel to the existing single-carriageway flyover will be built with loops and slip roads.

“The project will reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. We will be able to overcome the cost of the project across three phases by 2020. While the cost of Phase-I has already been recovered, Phase-II’s cost will be recovered by 2018 and Phase-III’s by 2020,” PWD Officials said.
